Meditation can help deal with the moderate symptoms of depression and help the body relax so that the level of the stress hormone (cortisol) decreases, which stops it from signaling to the brain “we’re stressed.” It’s shown positive effects on the immune system, another system that can signal our brain when something is wrong, especially when it comes to stress. Both the neural and hormonal regulations become more balanced with regular meditation, but it’s probably not a panacea for everyone. It always depends on the person and it’s only meant to really help with everyday stress.
