How can you foster a healthy caregiver relationship with the person with Alzheimer’s and dementia?

By | October 21st, 2020

Between a caregiver and the person you’re caring for, it’s not pushing against each other but figuring out how to support each other and create opportunities for each other. One example: I like to run, he doesn’t like to run- should I give up running to be with him or should I find someone who does something he likes to do so I can do what I like to do. Navigating these decisions and recognizing when to step back is difficult but sometimes unavoidable. Both caregiver and “patient” would benefit from an environment in which they are both supported and have this kind of fun, dynamic relationship. Not giving up on “different” is one of the hardest parts of living with Alzheimer’s, but the journey is a long time and it’s important to understand that it’s natural!
