Would treatments that involve psychedelics also involve a drug trip?

The jury is still out on that, and there’s a couple different approaches here. One that has been gaining a lot of notoriety lately is using what they call “microdoses,” so very small doses that would be so small that typically you wouldn’t notice any sort of subjective or psychoactive drug effects. There’s an idea that by using continued microdosing of LSD or psilocybin that you may have enhancement of mood or memory function over time. This would be very similar to what you see with your normal SSRI treatments for depression. It’s ongoing for a long period, and hoping that it’s causing these gradual changes that persist over time. The evidence is not clear on that yet. So far, the few, small studies that we’ve seen looking at those types of questions have been pretty inconclusive. They’re not really showing, that at least acutely, or in the short term that you’re seeing improvements, at least in healthy people.
