In the one layer that uses the chemical transmitter in the cholinergic system the most, in the preclinical stages of the disease (before clinical onset of symptoms, possibly by a decade or more), there was evidence of increased volume of that structure which we think represents an inflammatory process. We know inflammation in the brain is a key key component in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s. We also found “inclusion bodies,” which we think are blotches of tissue that contain beta-amyloid protein aggregating right around that same layer and interfering with the transmission of light from the scanners.
